Lys pursed her lips but said nothing, her gaze focused on the unblemished ceiling.

“What now?” Vivian had pushed herself up on her hands to gaze down at Lys. There was concern in her tone, but Lys could swear she detected irritation.

She turned her head to face the brunette and placed a reassuring hand on her waist. “Nothing. I’m just tired.”

“Then you should get some sleep.”

Lys shook her head. “I gotta head home soon.”

Vivian nodded understandingly. “I brought back something for you and Cameron. Perhaps I can pick him up from school on Monday and we can have an early dinner before you work.”

Lys brought up her work schedule in her mind, but she already knew she would be working doubles as she had been for over a week. “I work early.”

Vivian looked hopeful. “Then we’ll pick you up from work.”

“No, I have a back-to-back shift,” Lys explained.

“Oh.” The disappointment and confusion was etched on her face.

Lys perked up and pressed a hand on Vivian’s arm. “How about Wednesday? Me, you, and Cameron. Dinner at Antonio’s?” She had cash to splurge after all.

Vivian shook her head. “I have an important meeting the following Monday morning and need time to prepare.” She gave a small smile accompanied with a proud blush. “The owners of New Images Photography have requested to see my portfolio. It will really open up doors if they approve.”

“Of course they will,” Lys smiled softly at her news, but the smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.

They barely saw each other as it was. How were they supposed to keep this up when Vivian would be traveling for shoots or holding extravagant parties like Roberto’s, or when Lys worked just as often? The thought terrified her. She masked the uncertainty in her eyes by pressing a kiss to both of Vivian’s eyelids just before the brunette settled into her side.

“I’m glad you’ve decided to grace us with your presence,” Vivian teased as Camille walked into their usual coffee shop the following Sunday over half an hour late.

“I could have very well said the same for you,” Camille defended. “How is Lys anyway?”

Vivian dipped her head as she stood from the table she was seated at to wait in line with her friend. “I probably know as much as you do to be quite honest,” the brunette admitted quietly.

Camille whipped her head to her friend curiously. “What do you mean?”

Vivian shrugged a noncommittal shoulder, but she knew Camille looked concerned. “We’ve both been quite busy the last month. I’ve seen her only a handful of times.”

“Is anything wrong?”
